UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive game where a young woman containing multiple human souls inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her reside four separate personas, each with their own fears and drives. These entities can take over spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.

Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, though additional clips depict the main character exploring a desolate church.

An Environment of Personal Horror

"What are you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are unique to each person."

The core mechanic revolves around managing the persona that emerges at a particular time. However, these identities will switch against your will as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the protagonist one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice

Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with nurses who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous blooms where their heads are. Flowers are an ever-present element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."

After a player have deduced a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, since each soul can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity standing might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
