Britain's premier artificial intelligence institute has announced a new mission to help defend the nation from online assaults targeting vital networks including energy, transport and public services.

The Alan Turing Institute will carry out a programme of science and innovation specifically developed to safeguard Britain from adversarial risks, according to a Tuesday declaration.
This fresh focus follows organizational reforms at the publicly-funded organization, including the departure of its ex-leader last month after both employee protests and official demands for major restructuring.
Growing Cybersecurity Concerns
The new mission comes amid rising apprehension about Britain's vulnerability to internet outages and digital assaults.
Recent incidents have highlighted these risks, including a major outage affecting global cloud computing and recent cyber-attacks that disrupted production at key facilities and supply chains across multiple companies.
Leadership and Oversight
A previous senior officer of the the nation's space operations center will report back next month on how the publicly-supported center can most effectively assist the scope of official artificial intelligence goals in defense, homeland protection and information gathering.
Organizational Refocusing
The organization's leader, a ex-Amazon UK executive, confirmed that 78 different research projects at the organization with 440 employees have been closed, transferred out or completed because they do not align with the fresh focus.
Workplace Issues
The institute has faced internal strife since last year as staff protested against changes, culminating in a collection of workers submitting a formal grievance to the appropriate oversight organization.
The center's administration stated that these staff complaints were externally examined by a external organization that found them to have no substance.
Expanded Research Focus
The organization will also focus on deploying AI for climate-related uses and healthcare advancements.
