A extensive search and rescue operation is presently under way in the Caribbean waters for a pair of unlocated sailing vessels carrying relief goods journeying from Mexico to Havana.

Military Search and Rescue Missions Launched

The Mexican government has dispatched navy personnel and reconnaissance aircraft to search for the two vessels, which were had on board no fewer than 9 crew members, per a navy statement.

The ships had been scheduled to make landfall in Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no confirmation of their docking, authorities reported.

The Situation of Aid to Cuba

Cuba has depended significantly on Mexico's over the last several weeks, as the country struggles through repeated power outages across the country.

"Both captains and crews are experienced sailors, and the two ships are equipped with appropriate safety equipment and communication devices," a spokesperson associated with the mission commented.

The nine individuals on board are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Officials said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"We are working closely with the authorities and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the statement continued.

Earlier Relief Delivery

Previously that week, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and officially received a different ship that had carried 14 tonnes of donated goods to the island.

That vessel, called "a modern Granma" in reference to the vessel in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to launch the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar panels, drugs, infant formula, bicycles and food.

Broader Geopolitical Context

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded attempts to deliver critical assistance to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the country began.

Global bodies have since warned of "dire" lack of essential goods, with in excess of fifty thousand surgical procedures cancelled in Cuba because of power shortages.

Foreign policy measures have been ramped up lately, with statements from several leaders underscoring the complicated state of relations.

Responding to certain statements, a prominent Cuban official stated firmly that "the socialist system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Reports suggest that preliminary steps of discussions commenced, although their present status remains unclear.

The naval forces said it was dedicated to using every available asset at its command to find the sailboats and ensure the safety of the crews.

To date, there has been no public statement on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
