The Young Spinner Makes Unexpected Inclusion in England's Test Series Team
England have chosen a 12-man squad just two days ahead of the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a surprise place.
The 22-year-old’s selection suggests that the tourists will wait until the day of the first Test to determine whether the venue conditions suit a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are included in the 12-man group, showing there are no concerns about their fast bowler's fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with Carse expected to be omitted if Bashir makes the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Seamers
Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to choose an pace-only lineup on a venue that has staged several past matches.
During these matches, the majority of dismissals have fallen to pace bowling, with only a small number to spin.
Of those 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has taken the bulk, while all visiting spinners together have just a handful.
On a ground known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, stated that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a team loaded with seamers remains the more likely choice.
Alternative Choices Weighed
There had been speculation that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the team to provide some slow bowling while additionally strengthening the batting lineup.
But the coach has opted to stick with Bashir, having said previously that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the Ashes.
Earlier, Lyon commented on the English spinner as “OK,” saying that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still the English best spinner.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who lack experience in the previous in these conditions,” he remarked of spin bowling in matches Down Under.
“I won't let my secrets out so opponents come out and excel out here.”
