The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Track
This latest animated series, the most recent animated series by Critical Role, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It features the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at multiple agonizing personal histories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.
All in all, the opening looks stunning. However, I felt that something was lost in the music selection.
The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an installment of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the animated show will have a few changes and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on Spotify and the video site.
