The Former French President Preparing to Release Jail Diary Detailing His 20 Days Incarcerated

Nicolas Sarkozy will soon publish a memoir this autumn named Notes from a Cell, which recounts the period endured in jail.

This news came less than two weeks after Sarkozy gained freedom as his appeal proceeds the court ruling for criminal conspiracy regarding a scheme to acquire presidential race money provided by the leadership of the late Libyan dictator.

Life Behind Bars: Solitary Musings

“Inside jail visibility is limited, with little to occupy time,” he reflects in a preview, indicating the memoir will focus on his musings from isolation rather than a broader observation regarding the packed and crisis-hit French prison system.

“Quiet is absent, not present in that facility, where there is endless commotion,” he adds. “The noise unfortunately never stops. However, akin to empty spaces, personal reflection is strengthened in prison.”

Court Appearance: Recounting the Hardship

While appealing for release, he had appeared via screen from inside the facility, describing his time inside as gruelling. He had told the court: “I wish to commend to all the prison staff, showing great humanity, and who have made this difficult experience tolerable – because it is a nightmare.”

“I didn’t expect that in my seventies, I’d be in prison. It’s a hardship forced upon me. I confess it’s hard, extremely tough. It has an impact on any prisoner as it’s exhausting.”

Unprecedented Situation

He, the ex-head of state for a five-year term, set a precedent as former head of an EU country and the first postwar leader in the French Republic to be incarcerated.

Before entering jail he declared he intended to spend the period for authoring a memoir.

Books in Prison

It is not certain did he manage to go through the texts he had in his cell: a life story of Jesus spanning two books together with Dumas’s work the famous story, in which a wrongfully accused individual ends up incarcerated then breaks out to seek vengeance.

Prison Conditions

He remained in solitary confinement to protect him in a cell of about nine sq metres featuring a personal bathroom in the Paris jail in the city. Guards were stationed in a neighbouring cell.

Reports indicated that he consumed solely dairy snacks in prison because he feared meals provided could have been tampered with. He had facilities to cook for himself yet he declined, based on unnamed sources. Unclear remains if the memoir includes meals during incarceration.

Lawyer’s Statements

Sarkozy’s lawyer, who saw him regularly each day throughout the jail term, told the release hearing his safety would improve outside jail rather than in custody. “He has faced menacing messages, has heard screaming at night and emergency responses in an adjacent room when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Legal Proceedings

Sarkozy went to prison last month following a French court imposed a five-year sentence for illegal collaboration related to a plan to obtain political donations for his 2007 presidential race.

He maintains his innocence and is contesting the ruling, and a fresh trial is scheduled for the coming spring.
