The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

No fewer than 16 individuals perished and over 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have called a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were taken to the hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments before the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
