The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will End... Currently.

The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

As the debut season of the acclaimed series wrapping up—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—the writers' room reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.

On the Incredible Fan Response

Anyone might to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and online debates about Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to ignore the noise.

“The experience is akin to an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by what people are saying.”

“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.

The Central Mystery: Will Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?

Given that the creative staff are not listening by fan response, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… in a way.

“We have some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” he states. “but we are always ready to abandon a solid concept for a better idea. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Then again, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.

“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Of course, why mess with the legendary finales?

“My dream is Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV+.
