Monarch to Deliver First-Hand Address on Cancer in TV Programme

The Monarch has taped a personal message about his experience with cancer, scheduled for transmission as part of this year's Stand Up To Cancer drive, run by Cancer Research UK and a major network.

Buckingham Palace confirmed the King would reflect on his "healing process" as a person living with the disease, in a televised statement on this Friday at 8pm UK time.

The address, taped inside his London residence a fortnight ago, will emphasise the critical nature of cancer screening checks to help guarantee more people catch the disease at an early stage.

This will be a infrequent public commentary on the wellbeing of the Monarch, who has been undergoing regular treatment since the news was shared in early last year. However, it is believed improbable the King will specify his particular diagnosis.

The Campaign's Central Purpose

The annual charity initiative each year collects money for clinical trials and therapies and prompts people to get screenings to increase the probability of an timely detection.

The King's public discussion about his illness, and living with cancer, has been designed to promote education and to encourage more people to get tested - and this will be escalated with this unique royal involvement.

To date the King's key philosophy to his cancer has been to keep working, maintaining a busy schedule in spite of his ongoing course of therapy, and he is understood not to have sought to be characterised by his condition.

The past twelve months has seen the Sovereign, undertaking several international tours, notably to Italy and Canada, and hosting the biggest number of foreign dignitaries to the UK for decades, including the German president recently.

Charity Broadcast Event

Friday evening's Stand Up to Cancer broadcast on the network, featuring well-known figures including several TV personalities, will appeal to people not to be afraid of getting cancer checks.

The hosts have been had experience with cancer - one host said last month she had undergone surgery for a tumour, while Balding was overcame thyroid cancer more than 15 years ago. Comedian Hills has previously discussed his father, who had a diagnosis and then later another illness.

The show will reach out to the approximate 9m people in the UK who Cancer Research UK state are not current with NHS screening schemes, with an online checker to let people determine if they are qualified for screenings for breast, bowel and cervical cancer.

In an attempt to demystify screenings and illustrate the importance of early diagnosis there will be a live broadcast from hospital departments at Addenbrooke's and Royal Papworth hospitals in Cambridge.

"The goal is to remove the anxiety out of cancer screening and demonstrate all people that they are not isolated in this," stated a presenter.

Understanding Screening Programmes

Right now in the UK, there are a number of publicly available checks - for bowel, breast and cervical cancer - offered to eligible individuals.

A new preventative initiative is also being phased in for anyone at potential risk of developing the disease, specifically targeting people aged 55-74 years old, who have a smoking history or have smoked in the past.

Men may request prostate cancer checks, but there is lacking a standardised service operational.

Ongoing Efforts

The fundraising campaign, which has collected £113m since 2012, is financing multiple medical projects with thousands of patients.

His Majesty, in a statement for dignitaries at a reception for cancer charities in the spring, had referred to acknowledging the "overwhelming and at times scary situation" for those diagnosed and their families.

But he stated his experience of coping with cancer had demonstrated that "the darkest moments of sickness can be illuminated by the support of carers," as he praised those who supported those receiving treatment.

Official sources has not disclosed the specific type of cancer the King has, or the medical care he has been given. The King's cancer was identified after he had had a prostate procedure.
