Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”
NYPD issued surveillance images Monday of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries were reported.
The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday morning about halfway between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse just had a baby.
“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
Boyd came to New York as a new signing in spring and was projected as a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on August 2 and was carted from the field.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
