Israeli citizens commemorate second anniversary of 7 October attacks as Gaza ceasefire talks continue
People have gathered around the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-conducted offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations continued in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The incident resulted in more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.
Israel answered by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other global organizations.
"The bloodthirsty adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the prime minister stated on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "realize all the objectives of the war: the release of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will never again create a danger to Israel".
Memorial Gatherings Across Israel
The national leadership postponed formal commemorations until mid-October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still took place around the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the families of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was conducted in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the affected families, it was aired throughout Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was held around the country.
Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' delegations gathered in the North African Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a second day of mediated discussions to discuss the terms of the proposal.
A senior representative involved in the discussions indicated that an evening round of mediated discussions began at 7 PM local time.
The official stated the morning session concluded without significant progress, due to differences over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not recommence combat after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He noted that the discussions are "difficult and have not yet achieve any major advancement," but mentioned that mediators are making efforts to reduce the disparities between the two sides.
Key Issues in Discussions
- A lasting halt to fighting
- The exchange of the captives still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance distribution
- Post-war administration of the region
Civilian Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother endured the attack on the outdoor event, where many attendees were killed and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - shared: "No location feels like home anymore and until every captive return no one will be secure."
"Once we see everybody home again, we can relax once more. Then we can start to heal," she concluded.
Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people assembled to show their support for the loved ones of the captives. Israel says 48 continue in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.
Protester Atalia Regev stated: "We must do any agreement needed for the hostages to return. But we really want assurances that we will be protected."
Opinion polls now consistently show that about seventy percent of Israeli citizens desire the conflict to conclude in exchange for the release of the abducted.
Gaza Conditions
At the area of the music event, those paying respects assembled to pay their respects.
From the site, the sound of military attacks and shelling could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers said the severe Israeli attacks persisted.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were noted in the early hours of that day in the west side neighborhood, Rimal and Nasr districts and in the eastern district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwest.
"As the dusk falls, the anxiety arrives with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike last year, explained.
"Me and my three children are terrified of the air strikes. During nighttime we are lying together, clinging, notably my little child who rests his face on me the entire evening."
"Every second we check the news to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the fighting will come back to us."
Health Crisis
The healthcare center in the urban area said it had received the bodies of half dozen people by the daytime, including several who died in an Israeli strike in the south part area.
Nasser hospital in the south region of the city reported another two dead people had been delivered. One of them was lost his life by Israeli troops while attempting to get help to the south, medics said.
The region's health ministry said a significant number of the {territ
