Identification Images of 70,000 Users Potentially Were Exposed, the Platform Reports
Discord, a chat application popular with video game players, says that official ID photos of approximately 70,000 users could have been compromised after a digital security breach.
External Provider Compromised
The service, which has more than 200 million users globally, reports that hackers had compromised a firm that assisted in confirming the age verification of its account holders but Discord's own systems was not directly affected.
Users can upload official pictures to authenticate their age bracket on Discord - a social space for gaming enthusiasts to interact and share files with fellow users in the player network.
Scope of Data Exposure
The compromised details potentially contains private data, incomplete payment card information and correspondence that were exchanged with the platform's support representatives.
Complete payment card information was not, security codes, or correspondence and platform usage apart from exchanges with Discord's customer support agents were compromised, the firm stated.
Remedial Steps
Every affected account holder have been contacted and Discord is collaborating with law enforcement to probe the situation, it mentioned additionally.
The service announced it has terminated the customer support provider's permissions for the system that was targeted in the breach. Discord declined to identify the third-party company affected.
Divergent Reports
Some digital analysts have claimed that the information leak was more extensive than Discord has revealed.
A representative for Discord declared that those assertions are incorrect and "constitute an effort to demand money" from the company.
"We will not reward those responsible for their unauthorized deeds," the representative continued.
