From The Last of Us Co-Director Comes a New Game That Seems Unfamiliar Yet Builds On Familiar Concepts.
A key creative force responsible for a legendary franchise is making a comeback into game development. His new project, titled Coven of the Chicken Foot, represents the inaugural effort from his new team, Wildflower Interactive, a project that draws heavily from his previous work prioritizing characters that learn and adapt.
A Witch, A Creature, and A New Kind of Adventure
Unveiled during a recent industry showcase, Coven of the Chicken Foot is pitched as an adventure game blending puzzles and platforming. You guide an elderly witch, a hero that subverts conventional action-game archetypes. This central concept stemmed from an interest in re-examining what it means to be a protagonist.
"What if you lacked traditional weapons? What if your character was somehow encumbered? What if you’re a little old lady?" asked Straley. "I thought it was deeply interesting to explore the essence of heroism. Being a hero means persevering against obstacles, but also encompasses selflessness and unwavering will."
The Reactive Companion: A Spiritual Successor to Ellie
Although this project appears distinct on the surface, its core innovation is a direct continuation of the work developed for The Last of Us. The entire project flowed from one pivotal question: "Is it possible to design an AI partner more dynamic and responsive in response to the user?"
The mysterious beast that accompanies Gertie isn’t an average NPC. Straley describes it as a learning entity which observes and responds through a multi-phase process. Initially, it exhibits curiosity, resulting in playful hijinks. Then, it enters a playful state. Ultimately, it analyzes to understand grasping cause and effect.
- As an instance: If the creature sees an object being placed, it grasps the physical act without knowing the purpose.
- It will then start picking up various things and test fitting them, copying the action.
- Understanding comes solely through accidental success a puzzle itself, forming an organic connection.
A Personal, Player-Driven Narrative
This intricate technology aims to foster a deeply personal experience. The director emphasizes that Coven of the Chicken Foot will be a deliberate, discovery-focused adventure as opposed to a scripted, action-heavy path.
"Each effort to insert more hardcore story beats for this project, the excitement fell apart," Straley explained. "The true vitality in this partnership is that each individual player are going to have personal anecdotes and outcomes than I will."
This focus on player-defined experiences, this upcoming game signifies simultaneously a refinement and a significant shift from the director’s well-known franchises. The project is currently targeting Windows PC.
