Eurovision Used to Be a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Sanitize Conflict.

An new term emerged several months following the onset of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This term is unique to Gaza, per insights from health professionals like child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for physicians to treat a child who has been bereaved of their complete family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” about the genocide in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been wiped out and the number of young amputees exceeds that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal in many doctors arriving back from a sea of ruins with reports of children being intentionally shot at.

A Living Nightmare Despite a Reported Truce

Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that violations are continuing. Officials has denied these allegations, just as it disavows each claim it is accused of. Meanwhile, while traumatised orphans are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its declared purpose of “unity and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, even though at least four European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, apparently, is what unity resembles.

Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from competing in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems entirely distinct.

Contradictory Principles

Forget the fact that Israel was alleged to have used questionable voting tactics last year in what appears to have been an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On While Ignoring Profound Human Cost

The contest turns 70 next year – roughly two times the projected longevity of a person in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will likely never recapture the whimsical pleasure it once represented. A contest that was originally built on peace has transformed into a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
