Dallas' standout Commits to Foot the bill for Teammate's Fine Following Heated On-Court Clash in Lakers' Win Over Clippers
Luka Dončić voiced significant concerns regarding the unique NBA Cup basketball floor at the Los Angeles Lakers' downtown arena, describing it as “treacherous” and “risky”.
The Slovenian superstar was far more pleased, on the other hand, with his team's unity and resilience after Hayes defended him during a late-game confrontation with Kris Dunn – and he intends to cover the fine Hayes received for the subsequent technical foul.
Game Highlights
Luka delivered an impressive showing with 43 points, 13 assists dished, and nine boards during the decisive victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on that evening, just barely missing his 10th career 40-point triple-double achievement.
LA's fifth straight victory took a heated turn toward the end when Kris Dunn knocked Luka to the ground with a check to the rear. The player stood and faced Dunn, who thrust the ball into his torso. Jaxson Hayes reacted with a strong thrust of the opponent, who attempted to fight back with a swat at his head while game officials and teammates broke up the altercation.
“I got him,” Dončić remarked. “I thanked him immediately for backing me up. It’s moments like these that make me value this group. Each player stands up for their teammates.”
Past Confrontations
The two players have previously engaged in multiple on-court disputes.
- The duo earned technical penalties for a vocal argument when Dallas played the Jazz in December 2023.
- Dončić looked Dunn out of the game when Dunn was ejected from a LA-Dallas game in last December.
- The guard looked like he tried to harm Dončić with a trip from the back when the Lakers faced the LA Clippers last spring.
Tuesday’s confrontation concluded with Dunn’s ejection for two T’s.
“While going for a rebound, I was struck from behind,” Luka said. “I refuse to let it slide. Fear isn’t in my vocabulary. I’m not going to just stand there and let it go. ... That’s the nature of the sport. At times, things will turn physical. Plenty of trash talk occurs. I live for that, so I love it.”
Court Safety Concerns
The contest was played on the Lakers' gold version of the special courts implemented across the NBA for NBA Cup games – but Luka was concerned about safety.
“Adjust the courts, please,” Dončić urged after commending the format of the competition, now in its third season. “It’s just slippery. It’s dangerous ... I slipped a lot of times. You could see a lot of players slipped. That’s dangerous, man.”
The game was the Lakers' opening Cup game at home this season after starting group play with several games on the road. He said he couldn’t remember whether the courts in the Pelicans’ arena and Grizzlies’ home were slicker than normal.
“I think they’re just new courts, so it’s kind of tough,” the player commented. “They require ... more gameplay.”
Athlete Feedback
Criticisms about the tournament courts are a recurring issue. Celtics’ Jaylen Brown stated he injured his lower body while playing on the Toronto Raptors’ NBA Cup court in 2023, and fellow competitors have weighed in on the risks of playing on new hardwood.
James mentioned he noticed “a few athletes” having difficulty on the court during the game, but didn’t feel it was unsafe himself.
Cup Advancement
LA clinched their group and earned a place in the tournament’s next round with their victory. This is thrilling for the star, who is familiar with the idea of tournament play in a way his US-based teammates often do not.
“I think I never got past the group stage, so it’s something new for me,” he explained. “I played it in Spain, something like this, so I like it.”
Upon learning he had garnered at least $53,000 with the Lakers' group win, Luka, who has $198 million in professional salary, chuckled.
“Of course, I’m happy to receive the funds,” he quipped.
