Condemnation Surges as Former President Trump's Post on Rob Reiner Spurs Fierce Backlash
Personalities from across the partisan divide and the entertainment industry are uniting to denounce former President Donald Trump for his statements following the tragic passing of acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Controversial Online Statement
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Brentwood home, Trump took to social media to label the deceased director as "tortured and struggling". The message, he asserted Reiner's death was "because of the hostility he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Police Update and Detention
Authorities have since confirmed the detention of the couple's adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in connection with the case. Reports indicate his bail was established at a significant sum.
A Torrent of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians
The reaction to Trump's post was immediate and scathing.
This is a vile and vile comment,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, similarly criticized the remarks. She pointed to previous comments from Trump about the killing of an activist, demanding, "Have you no shame? Can you get any lower?"
California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "He is a sick man."
Echoing this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a despicable piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."
Rebuke from His Own Political Ranks
A number of GOP elected officials also expressed disapproval.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". Greene also alluded to struggles with addiction and psychological well-being within families.
Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disrespectful" given the circumstances. He openly challenged members in his political party to justify the comments.
Reiner's Legacy and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a past conversation, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also warned about the risks of authoritarian rule if Trump return to power.
"There is autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we fall, there’s a danger that democracy crumble around the world."
Regardless of his strong criticisms, Reiner had previously expressed "complete revulsion" and condemned political violence without reservation following the shooting of another individual.
A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of historical irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the story of the session, noting Trump's demand for "special hairspray" while being photographed on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
