Gavin Newsom, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he will make a decision about whether to run for president in 2028 once the 2026 midterm elections are over.

"Yeah, it would be dishonest if I denied it," the governor commented when questioned about contemplating a White House bid following the 2026 elections. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I'm not."

The governor's current term as governor wraps up in January 2027, and he cannot run again. Yet, he emphasized that any decision is still years away.

"The future will decide," he remarked.

Growing Prominence as a Political Adversary

The California governor has emerged as a prominent adversary of the former president's team, employing his online platforms and pushing a ballot measure that would boost Democratic House seats in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This move has made him a target from political opponents.

Controversy Over Funds

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom does not care about Californians in a weekend interview on Fox News. The secretary revealed a strategy to pull taxpayer dollars from California and suggested suspending the authority to issue CDLs.

"I'm about to pull $160m from the state," he said, after a recently reported deadly accident in California involving an unauthorized trucker that caused fatalities and injured individuals.

Newsom's office pointed out that the federal government had reauthorized the individual's authorization multiple times, which permitted him to obtain a trucking license under national regulations.

The transportation secretary had earlier indicated he was holding back $40 million from the state for ignoring English language requirements for CDL holders.

Firm Rebuttal from the Team

"Former D-list reality star, now cabinet member, still doesn't understand national statutes," his administration said in a last month's comment countering the secretary's comments. "In the meantime, as opposed to this individual, we focus on reality: The state's CDL holders had a accident mortality rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the only state with more commercial holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."

Polling Data and Political Future

A this month's survey found that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate said that Newsom must consider running for president in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, Newsom's favorability has risen to an average of about one-third from previous levels, while his negative ratings has decreased from an typical level of previous highs to under 40%.

Some time ago, the governor commented while visiting several key regions that he had "uncertainty" about his future for 2028.

He mentioned his earlier challenges, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the early childhood.

"The thought that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was often seated at the back – that such a possibility is discussed is, alone, extraordinary," he commented. "It's anyone's guess? I'm looking forward to who steps forward in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that's the question for the American people."
