The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect who crafted some of the most iconic looks worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.

He was celebrated for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the pastel suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

Price's death comes shortly after he debuted his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he began designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in shaping form-fitting garments established him as a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as various looks for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.

After a career spanning half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

Design circles mourns the loss to a true visionary whose legacy on style and culture remains profoundly felt.
