Arrests Made in Connection to Massive Unlawful Waste Site
Two individuals have been detained as an element of an investigation into the tipping of thousands of tonnes of waste in a field in Oxfordshire, England.
Officials stated that a 69-year-old was detained at a residence in the town of Andover, while a 54-year-old was arrested in the town of Slough in association with the enormous heap of garbage tipped near Kidlington.
These detentions follow a previous investigation which exposed the operation of in excess of 500 illegal tips in England, including at least 11 so-called "large-scale sites" greater than 20,000 tonnes.
A spokeswoman for the environment agency said that the arrests were for environmental and financial violations and were a "crucial step" in ongoing investigations. The two individuals have been let go on conditional release.
Magnitude of the Issue
The illegal site in Kidlington, positioned between the river Cherwell and the A34, is estimated to hold around 21,000 metric tons of refuse in a pile which is up to 150m (490ft) lengthwise and 6m (20ft) tall.
This mound of garbage is consists of what looks to be sorted household waste, fragmented plastics, polystyrene, automobile tires and various domestic objects.
It represents just one of 517 unlawful sites throughout England, at a minimum of 11 of which contain over 20,000 tons of waste. They include a 280,000-tonne location in the county of Cheshire, two 50,000-tonne sites in Lancashire and Cornwall and a 36,000-tonne dump in Kent.
The total number of such larger sites is expected to be larger, as the environment authority has earlier indicated it does not possess information on volume for every illegal tip.
The majority these sites are in countryside settings, frequently hidden, and on land that is zoned as farm land.

Law enforcement report many are managed by organized crime groups, who are generating cash by asking for much less than lawful operators to take and dispose of rubbish.
Companies have to pay gate fees to use legitimate disposal sites, depending on the amount and nature of material they are trying to discard, and a disposal levy is also applied at just over £126 per tonne.
Community Frustration
Preparation work to clean up the affected dump began in recent weeks amid concerns over the risk of blaze and the consequences that would have on the nearby A-road.
A contracted waste clearance contractor has been granted the contract to handle the location over the following 12 months at a expense of £9.6m.
An compliance officer for the national environmental crime division commented that the agency would be looking to recover the remediation funds under confiscation legislation from any party successfully convicted at the termination of its active investigation.
She further stated that this week's arrests would help "move the inquiry forward" and allow officials to "investigate more leads to understand precisely what transpired and who was involved".
"This unauthorized tip at this location was an appalling and deliberate affront on our ecology and officials empathize with the community's frustration at this terrible act," she stated.
A cabinet representative welcomed the arrests, adding: "This unauthorized deposit of garbage at Kidlington is utterly appalling and has led to substantial harm to the ecology and upset to the surrounding community.
"The authorities is committed to eradicating this category of crime across the country, by increasing resources to address waste crime, recruiting more staff and implementing stricter measures and penalties for those who flout the rules."
The detentions were carried out on Thursday by personnel from a dedicated organised crime squad and come after an prior arrest of a man in his thirties from the Surrey area in last November. He was set free subject to additional inquiries.
