An Tale of Unexpected Kindness: When a Student Let Me Stay on Her Dormitory Floor

Back in the year 2006, I made a trip to Canberra for a medical school interview. I figured to book a place to stay after getting there, but upon reaching the city, a large conference was taking place and every single budget hostels and budget accommodation were completely sold out.

Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of just sleep at the airport – only to discover Canberra airport, not like the one back home, is not open 24 hours. With no idea quite what to do and feeling increasingly desperate, I boarded a city-bound bus and started wandering in the direction of a gaming venue, thinking I could pass those hours somewhere that was open through the night. Admittedly, this plan in the best shape to succeed at the admissions interview the next morning, however, being a student on a tight budget, I couldn’t afford.

We could all use more individuals who show such kindness.

Apparently, I appeared out of place as a female student noticed me walking aimlessly through the city and inquired if everything was alright. I recounted the story of my accommodation crisis and right away she offered I was welcome to sleep on a spare mattress of her dormitory at the local university – a perfect solution, as that’s where my medical school interview was scheduled for the next day. She even offered some food: a leftover filled rolls she had taken home her evening job. I had access to the bathroom and somewhere safe and safe to sleep.

In retrospect, I now understand the significant risk she undertook being a woman inviting a male stranger who was a complete stranger crash at her place. At that time I operated under my own unawareness and did not consider to the potential danger. Now, as a father, I am astonished she took that chance – and remain incredibly thankful.

I didn’t end up attending ANU, and I never saw her again, but her act remains etched in my mind her selfless deed of kindness. My sincere desire is that karma has rewarded her act of kindness many times over. Our society requires more individuals who show such kindness.
