Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often marked by dark humor, this show's sincerity found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this lovable family go about their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to help comedy break out of its current cynical streak. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to bask in the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
