In a recent appearance, star Jude Law stated he had no concerns about backlash for playing Vladimir Putin in a cinematic adaptation. This production, though, could coincide so closely with the carefully constructed image promoted by Russian state media that, within Russia, it functions as a compliment instead of a challenge.

The Crafted Superhero

For years, the Russian political apparatus and the country's pop-culture machine have collaborated to forge a tailor-made persona of Putin. This figure is a political superhero without age or mistakes, a former spy reframed as a local 007 who consistently understands more than he reveals.

Screen-Based Support

One recent example is a television show released last October, directed by a pro-government filmmaker. The protagonist is a fictional security officer inexplicably chosen to “save” Russia from chaos. Although he is called Mikhail, the message is clear: the hero must be a familiar security officer.

International depictions often end up reinforcing this same narrative instead of debunking it. A new film based on a popular book sets out to subvert the leader's mythology by presenting him not as a cause but as a symptom, moving the narrative weight to the political machinery surrounding him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

On screen, Putin is presented as having been picked by influential figures to stabilise the nation because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. The oligarchs approach him and all but beg him to become president. His response is that he would prefer to rule from the shadows, desiring permanent power.

This narrative is the Kremlin’s export myth: the detached, unwilling mastermind shaped by destiny. In reality, none of this took place.

The Reality of the Casting Call

No one actually pleaded with him to take the job. The position was in essence a selection process with many contenders. Central to this process stood an influential oligarch from the previous administration who expected to run the state in practice.

• The shortlist included various figures, among them an opposition leader later murdered and a former spy chief.
• According to an expert who researched Putin’s biography, the future president simply fitted the required parameters: obedient, from the intelligence world, and politically neutral.
• A businessman familiar with the process said the primary requirement was manageability and faithfulness, not leadership.

Building the 007 Persona

Analysts concur that the notion of him as a master operative was constructed retrospectively. Stories about his “recruitment work” in Dresden fall apart under examination. Fundamentally, he handled paperwork and technical tasks, a mid-level functionary not engaged in field operations.

Curiously, the move to framing him as a “spy” could partly have been inspired by the actor's arrival as James Bond. His harder interpretation prompted local outlets and social media to make comparisons with their leader. Edited images replacing Craig’s face with his appeared on city centers, fueling the growing tendency to see him as a local secret agent.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an actor popular with Russian audiences, the Kremlin are likely to seize the opportunity to portray this choice as a small victory. Its omission of public dissent, the opposition, or key figures in the story, despite covering recent years, is a pleasant bonus for official messaging.

Domestically, the president is frequently an omnipotent figure who never appears directly. He is signaled through portraits or orders from on high. In this new film, he at last gets a recognizable face—one that may inadvertently validate the exact legends it might seek to examine.
